DUBAI, June 8 -''golf in DUBAi'' ambassador Noh Seung-yul flashed glimpses of his growing status as one of the most exciting young talents in world golf when the Korean teenager qualified for the US Open to be held at the Pebble Beach in California from June 17 to 20.
Playing with the maturity of a seasoned golfer, the 19-year-old prodigy held his nerve in a three-way playoff for two spots in the sectional qualifying at Springfield Country Club in Ohio on Monday (June 7) with rounds of 70 and 65, making it to the starting line-up of the second major of the year along with Erik Compton.
This impeccable performance added another feather to the cap of Noh, who has already secured a spot in this year's British Open by finishing among the top four in an Asian qualifying tournament held in Kuala Lumpur. The winner of Midea China Classic in 2008 and the 2010 Malaysian Open, Noh is currently placed second on the Asian Tour Order of Merit and is widely tipped to emerge as the youngest player to become Asia's number one.
"This is just the start. I am sure this young boy is destined to go places," said Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman of CEO of golf in DUBAi. "The very fact that great Jack Nicklaus invited to him to play at the Memorial Tournament shows his talent is fast gaining worldwide recognition," he said.
"We are delighted to have him on board as our one of the Global Brand Ambassadors and like everyone we are following his progress on the global circuit with keen interest," he said.
Being an ambassador of golf in DUBAi, Noh is promoting the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters tournament on the global stage as part of a four-year partnership which extends up to 2014.
The immensely talented Korea announced his arrival on the big stage with a stunning victory in the 2010 Malaysian Open in March, the win making him the second youngest winner (18 years 282 days) ever on the European Tour after Danny Lee (18 years, 213 days).
The recovery shot he produced on the 72nd hole to beat his golfing idol KJ Choi for the title was also voted The European Tour Shot of the Month for March.
His chances of winning the title appeared to have taken a knock when his approach shot to the final hole at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club veered left and ended up on the edge of the practice putting green.
Noh remained unruffled and produced a miraculous escape, pitching his ball from a thin strip of grass over a pathway and a greenside bunker down a sloping green to within three feet of the hole to secure the birdie four he needed to win the European Tour event.
"I'm taking it one step at a time. My dream is to win Majors," said the golf in DUBAi ambassador. The Pebble Beach marks just the first step.
